Oman Coast to Mountains Self-Drive

Pick up your rental 4x4 on arrival in Muscat. Begin with the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a masterpiece of modern Islamic building, then explore the lanes of Mutrah Souq, full of spices, crafts and frankincense, and stroll along the Mutrah Corniche at dusk.

After breakfast, drive along the coast. Stop at the Bimah Sinkhole and at Wadi Shab, where paths lead to turquoise pools between high cliffs. Arrive in Sur, a historic port with old houses and a seafaring past.

Drive inland to Wadi Bani Khalid and its palm-lined pools for a swim. Continue to the Wahiba Sands for dune driving, the sunset and an evening at a desert camp.

After a quiet desert morning, drive to Nizwa. Visit Nizwa Fort and Nizwa Souq, then take your time exploring the old town.

Drive to Birkat Al Mouz, an old village among date gardens and falaj channels, then up into the Hajar mountains to Jabal Akhdar (a 4x4 is required on this road), with its terraces, stone hamlets and deep gorges. Spend the afternoon on a walking trail or simply enjoy the cool air.

Drive down from the mountains to the oasis town of Nakhal. Visit Nakhal Fort beneath the Hajar mountains and relax at the warm springs, then drive back to Muscat for your last evening.

After a last breakfast, drive to the airport in Muscat and hand back your 4x4.
